Questions on blogging to make income

I want to make blogging my "JOB." I am a stay at home mom, and the hardships we are having I need to bring in some income. We unfortunately don't have any baby sitters or I would pick up shifts at my old job. Working from home is really my only option.
I have read so many different things about how to make money blogging and I think I am more confused now then before I started reading anything. I understand needing to get ads on your site and then when people click on those ads you make something from them, but I can't buy those ads. Like I am BROKE.. FLAT BROKE. I have zero money to be able to put into buying ads to put on my site.
I need help because I am so lost. Really. I feel like my head is spinning. I need to start contributing some type of income to our family before we get so far behind we are just screwed.
Please help! Anything would be appreciated!

  1. There are things like Amazon Associates, Google AdSense, and Shop Style Collective that are ads that you put on your site without paying for. Some of them people have to actually make a purchase (like Amazon Associates), and some you just get paid per click. Now, honestly, I haven't really made much using these (really, like not very much AT ALL), but I know some people that are pretty successful with those so you should look into them! :)

  2. I am looking to make some income on my blog in the fall when both kids are in school full time and I have the time to really look into how. I am also pretty lost on how to go about it, but will start my research in September. Good luck with what you find!

  3. I would recommend starting out with your blog design. Freshen it up a bit and make it look professional-take inspiration from other bloggers and sites where they're making money and bump up your style game so you look like a blog that is ready to make money. It's a whole "Dress for the job you want to have" type thing.

Then, go for programs like Adsense and Amazon Associates (put some ads on your blog).

Up your social media game and then create a BlogHer profile and apply for social media sponsorship (I make more through BlogHer by sharing on Twitter and Facebook than I get from Adsense or Amazon).

Start accepting ads on your blog. You wont make much at first, but this will open the door for you to start swapping ads with bloggers. You can swap an ad for free, that just means you put your ad on their blog while they put theirs on yours in return.

Check out my post about accepting sponsors: http://www.mysocalledchaos.com/2013/08/new-blogger-series-accepting-sponsors.html

It will take a while, and a LOT of hard work, but you can get there. :)

  5. I too think your blog design would help tremendously. Also understand that it takes time and It took me even a full year before my blog got big enough to start getting offers. I recommend working with Linqia they seem to work with smaller bloggers. There are so many things that go into this equation that I could right a book on it. I think these are the main categories: Design, Sponsorship, Promotion, Readership, and Posting frequent. Have you ever thought about joining the Bigs & Littles Blogging Network to get blogging advice?

  7. It takes time. I attempted the ads, but I barely made any money at all. I worked on building up a few of my social media accounts, tweaking my blog design, and I just recently joined Linqia and a few other sites that pay for blog campaigns. It's just a few hundred dollars a month, but it definitely adds up!

  8. Look into Amazon Affiliates and then some other ad programs through networks like BlogHer! Best of luck!
